A American border officer has testified he could feel through his protective gear the force of a sandwich hurled at him by a DC demonstrator, who has faced court proceedings for physical attack.

Customs and Border Patrol agent the officer informed the court panel the food item "burst all over him" and he "noticed the onions and mustard" on his uniform.

Neither side challenges that the defendant, thirty-seven, did in fact hurl vulgar language and a prepared food item at law enforcement assigned by President Donald Trump to monitor the Washington DC in August.

The event was recorded on camera and became popular online, making Mr Dunn a symbol of protest in the capital to Trump.

Federal attorneys initially tried to achieve felony charges against Mr Dunn, but a legal panel chose not to charge him.

The former president's deployment of armed forces to the federal district this season sparked outrage from some of the local inhabitants, who saw it as a politicisation of the military.

Per charging documents, Mr Dunn approached a law enforcement team at about 23:00 on 10 August, referring to them "fascists" and yelling: "Why are you here? Your presence is unwanted in my city!"

The legal proceeding observed a re-enactment from Mr Lairmore on the trial day as he took the stand against the accused.

"I detected it through my ballistic vest," he testified of the sandwich's impact, mentioning that an onion string hung from his communication device and sauce marked his uniform.

The defendant's attorney, his legal representative, stated in her court presentation that throwing the sandwich was a "non-threatening act that did not, could not, result in harm".

But government attorney the prosecutor argued the defendant must be facing consequences.

"Regardless of identity, you can't just go around throwing stuff at individuals because you're mad," the prosecutor stated.

After the claimed attack became public, the defendant was dismissed from his position as a legal assistant in the federal legal agency.
