{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident took place on the third lap when safety workers were observed on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to change his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Official Investigation Underway
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were notified and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was displayed in that area"
"We are still investigating what occurred subsequent to that time"
