One Greater Manchester side has an amateur vets squad with 9 ex- top-flight players in their current lineup.

222 Top Division Goals, Three Hundred Twenty-Five International Caps

Wythenshawe Vets Over-35s are situated in south the city and compete in the Cheshire-based Vets League Premier Tier.

Their lineup this season features 9 former Premier League footballers, with a total nearly 1,800 Premier League matches.

The high-profile squad also boasts 222 top division goals and 325 international caps.

The squad feature Papiss Cisse, who scored thirty-seven scores in over 100 games for his former club after moving to them for £9m from German league club Freiburg in 2012.

Cisse made his debut for the team in their last home game versus reigning title holders Collegiate Old Boys and scored every one of the six scores in a six-two win - featuring a 32-minute opening period triple.

Wythenshawe's squad for this season also includes former pros such as England and Liverpool forward Emile Heskey, Hull City and Burnley winger George Boyd, Toffees forward Oumar Niasse, Wigan Athletic full-back Maynor Figueroa, City duo Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha and Premier League title winners Joleon Lescott and Danny Drinkwater.

Collectively, the ex- top-flight footballers have won 15 major honors and moved for combined transfer fees of about £123 million.

Household Names and International Stars

Ireland began playing for the team in pre-season this summer through close friend and present team player Blake Norton, and the former Irish midfielder then invited additional ex-pros, who all compete in a weekly nine-a-side match, to join in.

Ex- Senegal striker Niasse, who netted twelve scores in 65 top-flight games for the Toffees and still attends their home games, also made his first appearance versus Collegiate OB - who are located in the city and wear an Blue training kit as their strip.

"A friend Stephen told me 'join and play, it's a laugh'," said the striker.

"Then he told me we were playing a side from Liverpool and the shock I had when I noticed them wearing Everton shirts - I say this is strange for me!

"If you still enjoy football and you know you can still play, wherever you can kick a ball, what are you going to choose?

"The people who come and watch are happy and to make a day if they see us playing there and to ask us questions - it's really about the joy of us having a place we can play, with organisation of course."

Such is the squad depth at the club, he had his debut at full-back.

"It's a little different but then, I enjoy sprinting and just go forward - I'm not defending that much," he added.

"I warn my centre-back 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to keep attacking.

"That movement is what I'm looking for. It's good fun."

Along with the forward's 6 goals on his first game, Stephen Ireland has netted 8 in three appearances for Wythenshawe, while Boyd hit five on his debut appearance and Lescott, a defender by position, notched a triple in one match as a striker.

Wythenshawe are top of the Premier Tier with 3 victories from three and a goal difference of plus nineteen.

One opponent, 38, who features on the wing for Collegiate OB, came up against former Latics full-back Maynor Figueroa on the weekend - and had to tell his young boy who Emile Heskey was.

Figueroa has played at two global tournaments for Honduras, in addition to featuring in more than 200 top-flight games.

"It was going round like wildfire they had these former top-flight stars," remarked the player.

"I felt I was a little starstruck facing him to be honest.

"Also Heskey got on and he's has 60-odd England appearances.

"We held our own for a good 20 mins but then we had a man dismissed and it was hard.

"We really have not stopped chatting about it - I was phoning my mum and brother on the journey home.

"They were all really nice, shaking our hands after the match - it was like facing a bunch of normal guys.

"Now we are eager for the second fixture."
